It was an astute move and one that both companies embraced relatively quickly, on the basis that Universal would take the domestic earnings on King Kong and give Miramax the foreign receipts, while Miramax would take the home American box-office receipts on The Lord of the Rings and give foreign takings to Universal. There was one catch: whilst Harvey Weinstein was ‘thrilled with the idea that he could be involved in Kong’, he was quick to point out that, when The Lord of the Rings went ahead,
successes, there is still a danger of underestimating him, of supposing that it is possible to second-guess what he will do next or how he will do it. the scene in which Derek puts his own brains back in his shattered cranium, she commented, in not great but interesting English: ‘Oh, the head! And poor Derek, he was not very well before that!’ Bad Taste was greeted with a standing ovation and generated much enthusiastic interest. Despite the New Zealand Film Commission’s fears that the picture was ‘unsaleable’, it sold to ten countries in six days and went on to sell to twenty more. The French distributor invited Peter to attend the
rights in the film for Miramax; subsequently he also bought the New Zealand and Australian rights from the Commission. Jim Booth must have relished the rich irony of seeing a director whose movies the New Zealand Film Commission had frequently been embarrassed about having to distribute, suddenly being courted by a major Hollywood player. Indeed, Linde’s colleague, Tony Safford assured WingNut that they had ‘a home at Miramax’. Apart from the interest being shown by Miramax, Hanno Huth was so
